Job Summary
The Philadelphia School, a pre K-8 day school with 476 students and 115 employees, seeks a Director of Human Resources beginning July 1, 2018. The Director of Human Resources is responsible for managing all facets of the employee life cycle. The Director of Human Resources provides consultation to management on strategic staffing plans, compensation, benefits, training and development, budget, and labor relations. The Director is charged to perform research and create plans to attract and retain top talent to the school. The Director will oversee the Human Resources Generalist and the Human Resources Assistant to administer recruitment, payroll, benefits, compliance, performance, and create and maintain an up to date employee database.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
The Director of Human Resources will:

  1. Create and maintain robust performance management and improvement systems for faculty and staff.
  2. Create a recruiting and staffing policy, including electronic job postings, document pipeline and retention, and training for search committee members.
  3. Manage recruitment lifecycle, including coordinating candidate visits, conducting interviews and evaluations for all positions (faculty and staff) including off-site recruiting at job fairs, and conducting new hire orientations.
  4. Create organizational development plans and succession planning for faculty and staff.
  5. Create and administer employee orientation, development, and training in conjunction with Division Directors and Department Directors.
  6. In partnership with the Human Resources Generalist, develop policies and documentation standards in compliance with regulations.
  7. Oversee payroll and employee benefit plans and provide direction to Human Resources Assistant for semi-monthly processing.
  8. Handle all employee relations needs and work with the Director of Communications and Marketing for employee communications.
  9. Successfully manage and coordinate benefit programs (Health, Dental, Section 125, 403 (b) Retirement Plan, STD, LTD, Life/AD&D, COBRA, counseling and wellness programs) for employees, including all employee communication, problem solving and claims resolution.
  10. Ensure all plans comply with applicable laws and statutes (HIPPA, ERISA and IRS guidelines).
  11. Prepare/edit Summary Plan Descriptions as needed for plan changes and legal compliance.
  12. Manage annual open enrollment for Health, Dental and Section 125 Plans.
  13. Maintain employee handbook for the School and recommend changes to Administrative Team.
  14. Develop/edit/update job descriptions for all employees. Complete periodic job description audit and reclassify employees as appropriate under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
  15. Ensure compliance with federal and state statutes/laws such as FMLA, ADA, Sexual Harassment, OSHA, Worker’s Compensation, Title VII, and ERISA.
  16. Counsel employees regarding disciplinary problems and provide mediation when necessary.
  17. Manage employee separation process for both voluntary/involuntary terminations.
  18. Complete quarterly and annual State Unemployment Insurance reports.
  19. Create annual compensation and benefit surveys.
  20. Work in partnership with the Director of Finance and Administration for the creation of a Faculty Salary/Compensation Scale, and administer and communicate the scale on an annual basis.
  21. Provide training for department heads and team leaders on various HR topics including interviewing skills, performance reviews and employee coaching.
  22. Administer trainings to all employees, such as Sexual Harassment Prevention and Act 168.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or a related field; SHRM or PHR designation desirable.
  • 5+ years of experience in Human Resources Administration.
  • Strong understanding of the interviewing process, benefits administration, payroll and other HR functions.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively.
  • Proven success in a senior administrative role.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities.
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other school community members.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills.

Knowledge & Skills Requirements

  • Working knowledge of human resources best practices, trends in (independent school) human
  • resources recruitment and retention.
  • Must be diplomatic, tactful, discreet, flexible, resourceful, dependable, well-organized, friendly, emotionally mature, punctual, and professional.
  • Must be able to work effectively with multiple supervisors, balance and prioritize multiple requests.
  • Must demonstrate ability to complete assigned project tasks on time and with minimal supervision.
