Sustainable Practices: Aquaponics, Green Roofs and LEED Certification featured at January 14 Meeting at Agnes Irwin School

The next meeting of the PAISBOA Sustainability Group will take place at The Agnes Irwin School on Tuesday, January 14, from 5:15-7:30 pm. The school is located  at 275 S. Ithan Ave., Bryn Mawr, PA 19010. We will begin with a tour of the school's LEED certified cafeteria, visit the green roofs, and observe an aquaponics system in the classroom. During our traditional low waste, plant-based dinner, the group will hear a presentation about Riverbend Environmental Center’s aquaponics program. Riverbend offers teachers a comprehensive program with the tools, curriculum and technical support on how to raise fish and plants sustainably. 

The Agnes Irwin School has been empowering girls for 150 years, and encourages girls Pre-K through Grade 12 to experience the joy of discovering their best selves in support of the school's mission of empowering girls to learn, lead, and live a legacy. With a 6:1 student-faculty ratio, every student is known, nurtured, and inspired to discover new passions.

The PAISBOA Sustainability Group is a network of environmental sustainability champions from member schools. The group gathers three times a year at a member school for a tour of "green" campus features and discussion of sustainability topics over dinner. Representatives range from faculty advisors to student environmental clubs, to members of a school "green team," STEM coordinators, facilities managers, and heads of school or directors of finance. Take Steps to Avoid “Forever Chemicals:” PFAS in Our Environment

Disposable foodware items found to contain
PFAS should be replaced with other products.


Recent scientific research has found that many disposable foodware items, such as compostable molded fiber plates and bowls, contain “forever chemicals” that are hazardous to environmental and human health. Called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS for short, these chemicals are building up in our bodies and in our environment, and may be linked to serious potential health effects, including kidney and testicular cancer. Food service directors may want to inventory current purchasing against known PFAS-containing products.
