Sustainability Group Meets at Friends Central School on April 17

Lettuce Feed You: Sustainable Food & Equity

The next meeting of the PAISBOA Sustainability Group will be held at Friends’ Central School on Tuesday, April 17, from 5:15-7:30 pm.The meeting will take place on the Lower School campus, located at 228 Old Gulph Road, Wynnewood. We will explore the theme of Sustainable Food and Equity while dining on a low carbon, plant-based meal.

Participants will tour the Lower School Campus of Friends' Central, which features:

  • Light Lab (Maker Space)
  • Aeroponic towers and hydroponic plants
  • School gardens
  • Outdoor classroom
  • Bird blind
  • Pond
  • Compost

We will also hear about the school’s renovated Shallcross Dining Hall, certified arboretum and energy efficiency initiative on the Upper School campus, and discuss paper waste.

We hope to have Kelly Flanigan from PennEnvironment as our guest. Prompted by the results of PAISBOA’s Green Power initiative, Kelly recently recorded video of Al Greenough and student environmental club leaders at Shipley School and Springside Chestnut Hill Academy for the “Voices for 100% Renewable Energy” video series. We’d like to explore her interest in meeting with other student groups next year.

The PAISBOA Sustainability Group is a network of environmental sustainability champions from member schools. The group gathers three times a year at a member school for a tour of "green" campus features and the discussion of a sustainability topic over dinner. Representatives range from faculty advisors to student environmental clubs, to members of a school "green team," STEM coordinators, facilities managers, and heads of school or directors of finance.
