Germantown Friends School is seeking a full-time Director of Technical Theater.

The Technical Theater Director will have daily responsibility for the technical operation of the school’s three main performance venues - the Loeb Performing Arts Center, the Poley Auditorium, and the Yarnall Auditorium - including light, sound, video and audio recording, presentation support, choral and instrumental setups, set design and construction, and helping to coordinate necessary maintenance.

The Technical Theater Director (TD) will teach several sections of Technical Theater to middle and upper school students; classes include the teaching of set construction and stagecraft skills and leading students in the execution of various design elements. The TD will have experience in the theatrical aspects of set construction, lighting, sound, and video with design expertise in one or more those areas.

The TD will work as part of a collaborative team of artists and educators, while at the same time be expected to operate with a great deal of independence and exercise independent judgement in performing a wide variety of duties. The TD will work under the Theater Department and support all middle and upper school Performing Arts events and productions. The TD will maintain irregular and extended hours, especially as it relates to theatrical productions and performances.

Responsibilities include:

  • Operate, maintain, and safeguard the technical assets of the performance venues, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and maintenance of theater facilities.
  • Determine the necessary technical supports (such as lighting, sound, projection, and video) and special needs necessary for arts events and performances presented at the facilities in advance of production dates.
  • Design, set up, maintain, and operate lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music and other arts-related productions and projects. Assist guest speakers and performers with technical matters as needed.
  • Advise music and theater directors on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for individual productions, and supervise the implementation of approved technical designs.
  • Operate as a collaborative member of the Creative Team on all theatrical productions, including regular participation in Production and Design Meetings and participation in the creation and execution of an annual Production Calendar.
  • Supervise and assist with set and stage construction and management.
  • Teach classes in Technical Theater, Stagecraft, and Design to students in grades 8-12.
  • Provide technical support for performing arts-related productions 8-12.
  • Recruit, supervise, and train middle and upper school students in technical theater to support performances.
  • Orient facility users to safety, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations.
  • Monitor the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, recording and rigging equipment; arrange for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Assist with the preparation and control of production budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies.
  • Attends technical rehearsals in order to supervise and assist in the technical aspect of the mounting of shows.
  • Run occasional evening and/or weekend ‘work days’ in the weeks leading up to productions.
  • Make recommendations to the theater and music leadership regarding capital purchases of technical equipment
  • Be able to lift, push, or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools.
